In FY 2022, federal agency obligations to higher education institutions for science and engineering (S&E) activities totaled $44.6 billion—an increase of 3.3% from FY 2021 and an all-time high. Across all federal agencies, the Department of Health and Human Services was the largest funder of S&E support, contributing $26.7 billion, or 60% of the federal total.
